Victorian Silver Sliding Pencil

Regular price £135.00

This is a large Victorian Silver pencil, extending from 10.5 cm. closed to an impressive 14 cm. when opened.

It has a fluted barrel with a floral engraved slider ring and finial.  The finial is set with a foiled seal stone with a purple tinge, possibly amethyst.  The seal is in the form of a gryphon, a mythical winged creature.  The gryphon, in this pose, is associated with Leicester so there could be a connection with the city.  I don't keep a stock of sealing wax but a bit of White Tack gave a good, clear impression.

The pencil, dating from around 1860, is in excellent condition throughout and has a smooth sliding action.  The mechanism to expel the lead works well, although I don't have a lead of the correct size at the moment.
