The Waterman 513 was introduced in 1950 and replaced with the 513 NM in 1952, which was, in turn, replaced with the slightly lower specification W3 in 1955.
This pen is finished in a very attractive pearl silver colour with an irregular striated pattern. It features a box lever filler, a design that encloses the lever in a metal frame to provide a more secure fulcrum and minimise risk of swelling around the lever opening. The lever is gold filled, as is the 'art deco' style clip and triple cap bands. The cap is a smooth screw fit, tightening with one and a quarter turns.
The pen has been fully restored and is in first class, working condition. It has an excellent surface with a really deep shine and a partially worn, but legible imprint. The gold trim has stood up very well and shows no brassing, unusual for a 513.
At 13.3 cm. capped, it has an impressive posted length of 15.3 cm., quite a long pen in this configuration. It is a tactile pen with a solid, high quality feel.
The lever filling system works well and the 14 Ct Gold No. 2A nib writes with a smooth medium line and has a little flex to add character to the writing.
Although the pen had a relatively short production run, the 513 must have sold quite well as there are still some around, but it isn't easy to find one in such sparkling condition.
